A Visit to Carondelet Center

For the second year in a row, St. Mary’s Academy was invited to visit and present to the senior Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet at the Carondelet Center. Principal Mrs. Portillo attended the special visit with one student from each grade level/tie color. Each visit has provided opportunities for learning and teachable moments.

The wonderful visit allows for students to meet and speak with Sisters, many former SMA faculty, staff and of course alumnae! And each year, the blue, red, gold and green provide special moments of connection, nostalgia and sisterhood between the alumnae and the visiting SMA Belles.

During the live in-person and televised visit, Mrs. Portillo provided an overview and an update of the many growing school experiences and opportunities SMA had to provide. And each student presented on a different aspect of student life at SMA–all areas they found special and individually self-selected, whether it was the academic programming or the career pathways, the athletic programs, clubs, connecting to the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph or just speaking from their heart about meeting the best of friends and being cared for by the school community.

There are many unforgettable moments and cherished memories created each visit for the students, the principal and the Sisters. One thing we will all remember will be the smiles, the laughter and the joy that filled the room and filled our hearts.

The 2016-17 school year marks the second year that The Arts was designated an official career path program at SMA.  This year though, is the first year we accepted new freshman into the program into all three tracks .  The Arts Program contains three different tracks- students may choose to join the Media Arts, Visual Arts, or Performing Arts path.  Students who complete the program will know how to effectively create messages and works of art, a valuable life skill which will prepare them for any college portfolio, major, or career.

We’ve had a busy semester so far as you can see below and the hard work has just begun!  Second semester is chock full of arts activities including arts appreciation week, an arts showcase, a juried art show, and field trips for all three tracks.

This year we are happy to continue our partnership with The Colburn School, which provides us with a choir director for our student choir, The Humming Belles.  We are also very excited to have a NEW partner, Harmony Project, that brings instrumental music back on campus after a long absence.    Keep reading to find out more details on what’s been happening!

College Bound Belles

Our seniors are in full swing college application mode.   They’ve been attending application workshops on campus during their weekends and are busy in the college center during every break, lunch, and after school.  Cal State and UC applications were due Wednesday so hundreds of applications have been sent off already with lots of private school deadlines approaching.

Three of our seniors are Questbridge finalists and they will have the opportunity to be “matched” with some of the most prestigious schools in the country. If they win, they will earn a full college scholarship!
